Riena Yu, violin coach

is a student at the University of Chicago, and started playing violin using the Suzuki Method at the age of 2. Her first teacher was Miss Lorraine Fink, who was a student of Dr. Shinichi Suzuki, the creator of the Suzuki Method. She then studied with Dr. Chan-ho Yun at the Colburn School of Performing Arts in Los Angeles. At the Colburn School, Riena played in the Colburn Chamber orchestra for four years, serving as co-principal and co-concertmaster for two years. She was also hired to be a violinist in the Debut Orchestra for one year, during which she had the privilege of playing a concert with John Williams, the Academy Award winning composer.

Throughout her childhood studying at the Colburn School and attending a variety of music festivals, Riena has had experience playing in a variety of chamber groups. She also was able to take lessons and have coachings with Ken Aiso, from the Royal Academy of Music in London, and Peter Takacs, from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.

At the University of Chicago, Riena played in the University Symphony Orchestra for two years, and continues to be a part of the Chamber Music Program. Last year, she had the opportunity to perform the Shostakovich Piano Quintet at the beautiful Rockefeller Chapel. She performs regularly throughout the year with her Piano Quintet and Piano Quartet.

My son's love for music was deepened through the Hyde Park Suzuki Institute program! He was nurtured with loving and patient teachers who encouraged and motivated him. This is a highly recommended Institute and the director's vision for her students is simply Amazing! Also the parents are very supportive to one another as well as to each other's children...such an AWESOME village for thriving children!
